Seed potatoes in every nook and cranny

June was busy month for trying to find 70ish spots for seed potatoes in our garden. How did we get so many? A local supermarket was selling off 5lb bags of seed potatoes for 95 cents in early June – I can’t resist a bargain. The variety is known as Vivaldi, similar to Yukon Gold which is a favourite.

The garden really doesn’t have much space to accommodate them, but growing them brings the excitement of future treasure hunting in late summer and early fall when it’s time to dig up the plants and see what’s underneath. It’s always a privilege to have some left for Thanksgiving dinner in October so fingers crossed that we will have a good crop this year.

A few went into the raised bed and are doing well behind a trellis of green beans. Gotta improve mounding them.

Many more went into grow bags, and a few are getting started in compost bags. They’ve grown fast in homemade compost.

And when I couldn’t get marigolds for the planter boxes, a few went into them too – after all, potatoes do flower. The second picture below shows how they look a month later. I repurposed the strawberry netting to raise their growing area, filled it with straw and soil potting soil mixed with alfalfa meal.

And many thanks to an anonymous neighbour who gifted these pots to me last fall. They were planted last week. More potting soil mixed with what’s left of compost and alfalfa meal.

I’ll keep you posted on how the 95 cent experiment is going.

  1. Wow! That was a good deal, and it looks like they are growing well. No matter what happens, I’d guess you’ll get more than 95 cents worth of return! Maybe even from just one plant! And many of us couldn’t even FIND seed potatoes! Lucky day for you!
